Volunteers needed for Masonboro 4th of July clean up
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With 4th of July celebrations just around the corner, volunteers at Masonboro.org are looking for holiday helpers.
Masonboro Island is a popular attraction for boaters during the holiday and that traffic leaves lots of trash. Each year, volunteers take shifts during the 4th of July to hand out garbage bags and pick up trash. Masonboro.org co-founder Jack Kilbourne said they’ve collected more than 5,000 pounds of trash during the celebration in the past few years.
From morning until evening, the group said there’s still room for more help. Organization co-founder Jack Kilbourne said it’s an effort to keep the island as pristine as possible.
“So when we step off of the island, at the end of the party on the 4th, there will not be so much as a bottle cap left,” Kilbourne said. “It will be cleaner when we leave the island on the 4th than it was when we got there that morning.”
