Volunteers pack snack kits for Stop Summer Hunger campaign
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Kids are out of school for the summer, but this time of the year can be difficult for some families when it comes to providing three meals a day.
Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina kicked off their 9th annual Stop Summer Hunger campaign Friday.
During the school year, kids are provided with a free breakfast and lunch each day, but for some families it’s not possible to give their kids all the food they need.
Volunteers from Food Lion and Live Oak Bank were at the food bank in Wilmington packing up snack kits for those who need extra help this summer season.
“We think of summer as going to the pool, going away to camp, going on vacation with our family, but what we know with these families is just putting three meals on the table every day that they don’t typically have to is really, really challenging,” Beth Gaglione, Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC at Wilmington Branch Director, said.
Gaglione says the snack kits each had a sandwich, applesauce, nutrition bars, sunflower seeds, and a juice box. Kits will be distributed to eight different sites around the Cape Fear.
