Want to be a lifeguard this summer? Here’s your chance

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — As temperatures heat up, more people will be heading to the beach. Lifeguards will hit the sand soon too to make sure your time there will be fun and safe.

Lifeguard tryouts are already underway for a few beaches in New Hanover County.

Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue held a tryout this past weekend and will host their final tryout on Sunday, May 6 at 9 a.m. at Hamlet Avenue.

Candidates will have to swim 500 meters in the ocean then run 1 mile in the sand under 20 minutes to be considered for the 2018 team.

The lifeguard season in Carolina Beach begins Memorial weekend and runs through Labor Day weekend. The Town of Carolina Beach places 20 lifeguard stands covering approximately 3 miles of beach strand.  Lifeguards are on duty Monday through Thursday from 10:00 am to 4:45 pm and from 10:00 am to 6:45 pm on Friday through Sunday.

Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue also held a tryout last weekend and are expected to hold another on Saturday, May 5 at Crystal Pier at 8:30 a.m. WBOR says this will be your last opportunity to be a part of the team this upcoming season.

Staff in Wrightsville Beach will be at lifeguard stands from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., 7 days per week from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend.
