Wanted man found hanging from a tree

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, after a man wanted for rape was found hanging from a tree this afternoon.

Shortly before 4 o’clock, deputies responded to Sutton Lake Road.  Sheriff’s spokesman, Lt. Jerry Brewer, says that’s where they found John Cornelius Stanton, Jr. hanging from a tree.

Stanton was wanted for attempted rape and other felony charges.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is calling this a death investigation.
