Warrants: Independence Mall security cameras capture fatal shooting
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Multiple witnesses and even Independence Mall’s security camera witnessed the fatal shooting of Catherine Ruth Ballard.
The shooting happened on April 1.
According to court documents, video showed Ballard struggling with a man, who was later identified as Darius Dandre Nelson, 26. A woman, later identified as Traneta Campbell, 19, was sitting in the front passenger seat of a red Honda Civic.
Ballard got away from Nelson and began to walk away from the car. The passenger door opened and Campbell began shooting at Ballard, according to court documents. The video shows Ballard getting struck in the head by a bullet.
Campbell got back into the car and got into the front seat. The car then drove off. The camera operator followed the car until it left the range of the camera.
Documents state that Campbell’s mother told detectives Dampbell was driving a red Honda that belonged to a cousin.
Campbell was arrested two days later on Monroe Street for murder.
The Honda was also found at the scene. The car was seized.
Campbell is in jail without bond.
Nelson is in jail under a $500,000 bond. He’s charged with accessory after the fact.
