Water St. parking deck redevelopment inches forward
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — City Council took another step forward on plans to redevelop the Water Street Parking Deck, but not everyone is happy about it.
City Council approved the latest move in the redevelopment of that parking deck unanimously though not everyone on council was thrilled with the decision.
Tonight’s vote paved the way for East West Designers to continue plans for the deck space. The exact design of the new space is still unclear but it would have more than 500 parking spaces. Councilwoman Laura Padgett told members of council that the number of parking spaces is too many and that she was worried the development would be too tall and too intrusive on the riverfront. Others in the audience tonight said something should be done but they just aren’t sure it’s this.
“I don’t even mind, I’m not even against a development there. I just want us to have a little bit more the public to have a little bit more input,” Diana Hill said.
Tonight’s agreement wasn’t legally binding for the most part, but it did include a provision that if East West decides not to do the project they will have to give the city $100,000. Under the proposed agreement the city would still own the property. East West would just own the air rights.
Mayor Bill Saffo said tonight he thought this proposal would only serve to enhance the Wilmington riverfront.
