Water Street Parking Deck closing for good

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In one month, there will be one less place to park in Downtown Wilmington, as crews begin preparations to demolish the Water Street parking deck.

The deck which once held hundreds of spaces for several years will close for good. The City of Wilmington had said Wednesday would be the last day people are allowed to park in the deck. But this afternoon, the city announced it will stay open through Dec. 31. Demolition is expected to start in January.

The city says crews are installing an underground structure that will house utilities from several companies beneath the deck. This structure, called a joint duct bank, will help streamline future construction and minimize utility interruptions. Work on the duct bank was scheduled for completion by this week, but has been slowed by the presence of bedrock during excavation.

Redevelopment of the aging Water Street deck is a public/private mixed-use project that will include multi-story residential and retail space. Click here more information.
