Ways to beat the dog days of summer

Sunday and Monday have the potential to be the two hottest days of the year. The temperature is likely to reach the high 90’s on both of those days.

We stopped by the Wrightsville Beach boat ramp, and found plenty of boaters enjoying the day on the Intercoastal Waterway Friday. Some of them told us what they do to beat the heat.

“As a charter captain, I start the trips a little earlier. Get out and then get back before it gets real hot,” said Capt. Matt Wirt of Reel Adventure Charters. “We drink a lot of water when we’re on the boat to stay hydrated.”

“It’s going to be hotter in a day or two, but yeah to beat the heat I go out and wakeboard a little bit. You just have to go into the water, that’s how you beat it,” said Steve Phillips.

Don’t forget to take care of your pets during the heat. If you have room on the boat it’s better to take your dogs than to leave them outside or, worse yet, in the car.

And if you bring your children on a boat trip, don’t forget the life preservers.
