West Columbus football player to have leg amputated

The mother of the West Columbus High School football player who was shot this past weekend said her son, 18 year-old Anthony Bethea, will have his left leg amputated Wednesday morning.

Eva Bethea said her son is breathing on his own, but his injuries from getting shot in the stomach have led to needing the amputation surgery at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Bethea was shot outside a house party in Fair Bluff around 4 a.m. Saturday by 28 year-old Shondell Smith, who was shot and killed by a responding police officer.
