Westbound lanes of Leland causeway open

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — After a week of big traffic jams, the evening commute to Brunswick County should be better tonight.

That’s because all three westbound lanes of the Eagle Island Causeway are open across the new Brunswick River Bridge. NCDOT spokesman Brian Rick says there is still some paving work to do. Nightly closures will continue on the westbound side until the paving, Rick said. He said as soon as that side is done, the contractor will move to the eastbound side and do the same thing.

“There is also other work that will have to be done at night under lane closures at various locations,” Rick said in an e-mail to WWAY Friday morning. “The nighttime lane closures will be a continual occurrence throughout the remainder of the year.”

The DOT said recently the contractor on the project, which started in the summer of 2014, is still on schedule to be done by mid-November.
