What to do when a loved one goes missing

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY)– For friends and families of missing people, the attention garnered can be overwhelming, as there’s no rest or quiet time to contemplate the unanswered questions.

Gagian Edmund Corey had been missing since January 30th. On Friday, the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office provided an update — saying he’s been found. While Corey’s case received a brief mention in the news, it’s nothing like the publicity in which Nancy Guthrie’s case has garnered in the last six days.

Monica Caison is the founder of the “C.U.E. Center for Missing Persons.” she has been the leader of the search for ebony spears — a Wilmington woman who has been missing for 10 years.

Caison says friends and families of missing people can do little things to keep attention on their cases.

“You must be able to continue to keep them out there. Honor their memory, honor their life, keep their story out there, and do whatever it takes,” said Caison. “Whether it’s a butterfly release, a vigil, a march, whatever you have to do, keep them out there in the public eye, because after a while, a poster just being shared is just a poster being shared.”

Caison also says when reporting a missing person — don’t hold back any information, let law enforcement know immediately, and have a family member or spokesperson available to regularly speak with the media about the case.

The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons says there are 931 missing person cases this year, and 193 of them are still active.
