What’s going on along the Wrightsville Beach shore?
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — If you have been to Wrightsville Beach recently you may have noticed something a little strange along the beach. An escarpment has formed there.
So what is it? It’s a hefty drop-off along the shore. It’s a natural occurrence that’s a byproduct of erosion.
Wrightsville Beach Town Manager Tim Owens says this is a naturally occurring phenomenon that happens every year. At this point they are not planning to do anything about it, because he says the problem will fix itself.
Folks we talked with said they had mixed feelings about whether this was dangerous.
“It makes me worry about erosion, but it hasn’t caused me any personal problems,” Jake Williams said. “I think it is a great place to sit down and watch the water.”
“I don’t think anything of it,” Arlissa Graham said. “I don’t think it is dangerous for the children.”
Most folks we talked with felt like if you watched your step, you’d probably be OK.
This area of Wrightsville Beach where the escarpment is was just refurbished last year with new sand put all along the beach to combat erosion, but some of that sand is now back in the ocean.
