What’s scarier than Halloween? Pollution

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Halloween is just a few day away and while you might not realize it, there is something associated with the holiday that’s scarier than many costumes and haunted houses – plastic.

With the spooky holiday comes decorations and candy wrappers. Officials with the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher want to remind you of the dangerous effects plastic can have on ocean pollution and animal life.

Public Relations Coordinator Robin Nalepa and Aquarium Educator Marissa Blackburn stopped by Good Morning Carolina to talk about pollution and they brought a special visitor.

The Fort Fisher Aquarium is already doing its part to help prevent pollution. They’ve switched from plastic bags to paper in the gift shop and the snack bar no longer uses plastic utensils.

This weekend, you can attend the aquarium’s annual Halloween event, “Trick or Treat Under the Sea”. There, the aquarium will have games, magic shows, spooky divers, live animals, treats and eco-friendly booth decorations.

It’s from 4:30-8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, October 26, 27 and 28.

Tickets are only available in advance. The cost is $13 per person. Children younger than 2 are free. To get tickets, click here.
