Where is the stimulus money going to be spent in North Carolina?

We have been hearing all about $6.1 billion in economic recovery plan money coming to North Carolina, but where is that money going to be spent?

Two new websites help break it down, www.recovery.gov and a more local site, www.ncrecovery.gov.

Recovery.gov is an online portal where visitors can see exactly where federal funding will be distributed throughout the nation. Of the $780 billion federal stimulus package, $225 billion will be distributed among the states; about six billion is coming to North Carolina.

“Though I completely disagree with the idea of the stimulus package in general, it’s good to know that there’s a place where we can see where the money is actually going to go to,” said Wilmington resident, Erik Guffrey.

So North Carolinians can see where exactly where the money will be spent in this state, Governor Bev Perdue launched www.ncrecovery.gov. Visit the Recovery Plan and see exactly where it will go.

More than one billion dollars will be spent on education, seven-hundred million will go to building highways and bridges, and nearly eleven million will go to employment services.

In 2008, the Employment Security Commission reported 120,000 jobs were lost statewide. The White House estimates the stimulus plan will create, or save, 100,000 jobs in North Carolina.

The website is still in the preliminary stages. In the coming months, you should be able to see more details on how federal funds will be spent, a mechanism to suggest projects for funding, and details on how to apply for possible contracts and grants.
