White, Saffo send letter to Chemours requesting community meeting

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — As the quality of water in the Lower Cape Fear River continues to be a topic of conversation, New Hanover County and the City of Wilmington is once again requesting a meeting with Chemours, the company responsible for GenX.

Commission Chair Woody White and Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo sent a letter on Thursday, requesting Chemours hold a meeting with local residents to discuss any progress made and future plans to clean up the drinking water supply.

The letter, sent to Chemours Product Sustainability Director Kathleen O’Keefe, states ‘we think it is important to continue the dialogue and outreach over the status of efforts to remove GenX and related per-flourinated compounds form our drinking water.’

White and Saffo also say they are willing to make any City or County facility available.

One year ago, about a week after it was revealed Chemours was dumping GenX  in the Cape Fear River, the company held a closed door meeting with city and county leaders.

Last month, Chemours held a town hall meeting in Robeson County, but has yet to hold a meeting with residents in the Wilmington area.
