Will the economy keep you from celebrating New Year’s Eve?

Businesses have the potential to make a lot of money tonight, but will partiers pay up?

Brittany Goodwin said she is over the party scene, and with the economy the way it is, she is saving her money by staying home. “I’m just trying to spend my money on practical things. I can have fun at home with my friends,” she said.

That is not what restaurants, bars, and clubs want you to do New Year’s Eve. Many are banking on you celebrating with them. In fact, several have posted special promotions like free champagne, with party favors.

The City Tavern is offering a package deal on beer, food, and wine. Just a few feet away, the Fox and Hound competitor is offering a $99 promotion that includes dinner for two, a bottle of champagne, and an overnight hotel stay plus shuttle service.

Sales gimmicks Fox and Hound manager, Lawrence Gonzales, said are needed to improve his bottom line, while giving you more bang for your buck. “Definitely people are looking for a bargain. They are looking for a good deal.”

Cab companies said they will be busy, too. Managers at Port City Taxi said that New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest nights for cab drivers. They have 26 vehicles, and all of them will be out tonight. On average they get at least $10 per rider. Some drivers are expecting nice tips from people too tipsy to drive.

“Oh yeah, we look forward to that. It’ll probably be a lot of picking people up and taking them home, getting some good tips,” said Kat’s taxi cab driver, Ronnie Hawes.

Addison Ore is optimistic people will go out tonight. “I really do. I can feel it. What else are you going to do? I think people will you know. It’s one of those things that you can either laugh or cry,” she said.

The evening will be a busy night for police, as well. They will be out patrolling the streets. If you are planning to drink, have a designated driver.
