Wilmington building evacuated, closed due to structural concerns

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One block of Princess Street in downtown Wilmington is closed so crews can perform emergency structural repairs to a building.

Princess between Second and Third streets has been shut down so a private contractor can repair 201 Princess Street.

The building contains apartments on upper floors and a business, Memory Lane Comics, on the first floor.

The closure is expected to last two weeks.

Occupants of the building have been temporarily evacuated.

The City of Wilmington says after the building is stabilized, the contractor will perform additional repairs and install scaffolding around the building.

The scaffolding will allow for pedestrian’s to walk underneath.

During this phase, intermittent lane closures and road closures can be expected on Princess Street as well as Second street.

The owner expects the work to be complete by the end of this summer.
