Wilmington business helps transform historic Frying Pan Tower with offshore upgrade
BALD HEAD ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — One of North Carolina’s most recognizable offshore landmarks has received a major upgrade, thanks in part to a Wilmington business that took on a challenging project far from shore.
A team from Tint World Automotive Styling Center recently completed a specialized window film installation at the historic Frying Pan Tower, a former U.S. Coast Guard light station located about 34 miles off the North Carolina coast.
The crew, led by franchise owner Robert Harman, installed XPEL Dark Neutral 15% Window Film throughout the tower to help reduce the intense solar heat that impacts the structure.
The upgrade is expected to help the off-grid facility operate more efficiently by reducing the amount of heat entering the tower. Officials say the installation can improve HVAC efficiency while helping conserve battery and generator power which are important resources for a structure surrounded by open ocean.
Beyond the practical benefits, the project also supports efforts to preserve one of North Carolina’s most unique maritime landmarks while improving comfort for volunteers and guests who visit the tower.
A Challenging Installation Far From Shore
The project was anything but routine.
The Tint World team spent several days working in an extreme offshore environment, navigating unpredictable weather, complex logistics, and the challenges of completing a highly technical installation more than 30 miles from land.
The team documented the project from start to finish, capturing photos and videos of the unusual installation process.
Harman said the job stands out as one of the most unique tint projects his team has completed.
The team’s motto after completing the offshore installation: “If we can tint this, we can tint anything.”
The Frying Pan Tower, which once served as a Coast Guard navigational aid, has become a destination for visitors and volunteers interested in marine conservation, history, and offshore experiences. The recent improvements are part of ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance the landmark for future guests.
