Wilmington City Council votes on new name for former PPD building

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Months after acquiring the former PPD building in Wilmington, city officials have decided on a new name.
Tuesday evening, Wilmington City Council voted to name the building “Skyline Center.”
Council voted in favor of the name 6 to 1, with Mayor Pro-Tem Margaret Haynes voting against it.
The topical had been discussed previously by city council.
Mayor Bill Saffo, Mayor Pro-Tem Margaret Haynes and Councilman Clifford Barnett had been in support of “City Plaza” and Councilmen Neil Anderson, Luke Waddell and Charlie Rivenbark had supported “Skyline” at the council’s November 8 meeting.
Also on Tuesday evening, council unanimously approved a funding ordinance and cost-sharing agreement with Riverlights and Proximity Watermark LLC to install a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Independence Boulevard and River Road.
The total cost of the project is $2,100,300. The city will pay about 30-percent, which is $737,800.
“We’re constructing this as a single-lane roundabout to begin with, with the opportunity to expand to two lanes as we finish and improve Independence Boulevard in the future,” Mayor Bill Saffo said. “There’s a significant volume of traffic that is coming from the unincorporated areas of the county that are coming down River Road through the Riverlights subdivision.”
The city’s portion will fund pedestrian improvements, including a 900+ foot sidewalk along Independence Boulevard.
