Wilmington crews to repair riverfront bulkhead, remove limited number of trees

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — City crews will begin repairs to a riverfront bulkhead next week, with a limited number of trees set to be removed as part of the work.
The City of Wilmington said crews will be working at Church and Surry streets on Tuesday, Aug. 25, to make repairs to the bulkhead, a retaining structure along the river’s edge that helps stabilize the shoreline and protect against erosion.
The city said some trees will need to be removed to provide crews with safe access to the bulkhead and allow equipment into the work area.
According to the city, the City Arborist inspected the trees identified for removal. Officials said most of the trees are invasive or dead, while some additional trees will need to be removed to safely complete the repairs.
The city said removing invasive and hazardous trees is part of its efforts to protect Wilmington’s native ecosystem and maintain a healthy and safe urban forest.
