Wilmington Fire Department battling blaze at Independent Ice Company building

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Fire Department responded to a fire in an old commercial building on the north side of town late Friday afternoon.

Crews were on scene at the Independent Ice Company Building at 720 North 6th Street around 5:30 p.m. The were using an aerial truck to spray water on the fire and on nearby buildings. Fire officials say the building has been abandoned for several years.

There’s no word yet on what started the fire. Officials say building may not be safe for fire investigators to enter this evening.

The fire brought out a lot of spectators from the surrounding neighborhood.
