Wilmington Fire Department broke ground on a new station
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Nearly 3.5 million dollars and seven years later, Wilmington Fire Department finally broke ground on a new station this morning.
Wilmington’s Mayor, Bill Saffo and Fire Chief, Buddy Martinette spoke during the ceremony before breaking ground.
This new station will replace stations five and six. The new facility will be updated and will be able to accommodate larger fire trucks.
The Fire Chief said this location was strategically planned.
“This is an awesome accomplishment for the city. What people need to understand is this is the final piece of a puzzle that reduced our number of facilities, but also still provided the same level of protection for our citizens. Ultimately this saved 10 million dollars in this plan,” Fire Chief Martinette said.
The new station will be located on Shipyard Boulevard beside the Family Dollar store. Construction is expected to start in June.
