Wilmington gang member sentenced for discarding stolen gun on daycare playground

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man will spend a decade behind bars for throwing away a stolen, loaded gun in a daycare playground while trying to run away from police.
According to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice, 29-year-old Shaquille Gregg pled guilty to the charge on February 21, 2024.
The release says Gregg was facing charges from an incident that happened on January 26, 2022. Wilmington Police were conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle in which Gregg was the passenger. When the vehicle stopped, Gregg got out and ran off. After a brief foot chase, officers were able to catch him. When they retraced Gregg’s path, they found a stolen Smith and Wesson pistol in the fenced in playground area of a daycare. DNA testing revealed Gregg’s DNA on the gun.
According to court documents, Gregg was a member of the Double-II Bloods gang, and had been in trouble with the law several times prior to the January 2022 incident.
In 2014, Gregg shot a man in the face and back after he questioned his gang affiliation. In 2015, he was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Gregg also has prior convictions for possession with intent to sell and deliver heroin, carrying a concealed gun, and two federal convictions for distribution of a quantity of heroin.
