Wilmington Housing Authority project close to completion

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — An apartment renovation is breathing new life into a community. The Rankin Terrace renovation project is almost complete according to Wilmington Housing Authority officials.

Katrina Redmon, chief executive officer with the Wilmington Housing Authority, said the 77 apartments at the site were gutted. She said new water, sewer and electrical systems were put in as well as new appliances.

“We have new paint color. We have brought some vibrancy in and more light into the units,” said Redmon.

Rankin Terrace’s new look comes with a new community center. The community center has a meeting hall, kitchen, computer room and laundry facility.

Joan Johnson, a long-time resident of Rankin Terrace, said she likes most of the changes. She said the laundry facility will be a convenience for many families.

“It’s a good thing for those who don’t have washers and dryers. And they don’t have to leave off site,” said Johnson.

Redmon said about $6.5 million in low income housing tax credits helped generate about $5.7 million for the project. She said in total the renovations cost about $6 million.

Redmon, said they are still waiting to get a locking system for community center that will give residents access after hours. So for now it’s only open during business hours Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
