NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover Community Endowment’s latest funding commitment will go to an agency with a mission to preserve and create affordable housing.

Wilmington Housing Authority is receiving $5.7 million to support the Hillcrest Development Plan.

On Thursday, WHA Chief Executive Officer Tyrone Garrett advised the agency’s Board of Commissioners that WHA would receive the money and that it would be used for the transformation of the historic Hillcrest site.

Garrett says the investment will be a big step in helping advance the first phase of the project.

In June 2021, Wilmington Housing Authority put out a request for applications to redevelop the Hillcrest community on Dawson Street.

256 public housing units make up Hillcrest Apartments, a townhome development run by WHA that is located along Dawson Street between 13th and 16th streets.
