Wilmington MPO transportation draft shows more bike paths

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY)– A draft of the 25 year transportation plan for the Wilmington area shows more bike paths.

The Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization presented a draft of their 25 year plan to the New Hanover County Commissioners Monday. Along with bridges, roadway and freight improvements, the plan included several multi-use path projects.

New Hanover County Commission Chairman Jonathan Barfield says more bike paths could help alleviate the area’s traffic and he says it is what residents say they want.

“The more cars we can take off the road and put other modes of transportation there, the less congestion that we’re going to have,” Barfield said. “We’ve sent out so many surveys throughout our community asking the citizens here, ‘What do you want?’ Throughout, folks have said we definitely want, you definitely want to invest in you know the walkability of our community, bike paths, and pedestrian walkways.”

There will be four public meetings for the 20 year plan beginning in April to present the plan to citizens.
