Wilmington outdoor pools open Memorial Day weekend for 2026 summer season

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Families looking to cool off this summer will soon have two more options as the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina and the City of Wilmington prepare to open the community’s outdoor pools for the 2026 season.
The pools at Legion Stadium and Robert Strange Park will officially open Saturday, May 23, offering public swim sessions, lap swimming, water fitness classes, swim lessons, youth programs, and private rentals throughout the summer.
“These spaces give families an affordable place to cool off, stay active, learn lifelong water safety skills, and make memories together,” said Amy Beatty, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City.
Officials say water safety education remains a major focus of this year’s programming. According to the YMCA, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 4, and formal swim lessons can significantly reduce the risk.
“We believe water safety is a critical life skill,” said Lindsey Hayes, Aquatics Director for the Nir Family YMCA. “Our goal is to create safe, welcoming, and accessible experiences for everyone in our community.”
Swim lessons will be offered in four-week sessions throughout June, July, and August, while the YMCA’s Junior Lifeguard Program will return to Robert Strange Pool for youth ages 11 to 14. The program focuses on leadership, teamwork, emergency response, and aquatic safety training.
The pools will also host several community events during the summer season, including a Safety Around Water event on May 30 in partnership with Swim 1922, a “Hello Summer Bash” at Legion Stadium Pool on June 5, and the return of the popular Pooch Plunge event later in the season.
