Wilmington Police Department begins annual Peacemaker’s Conference
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The third annual Peacemaker’s Conference began today at Grace United Methodist Church.
The goal of the two-day conference is to bring together community leaders and law enforcement members from around the state to brainstorm and determine the best ways to combat crime in our community.
Speakers gave presentations covering topics from juvenile crime to domestic violence. Participants also work-shopped different scenarios that they may face in their own communities. Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said it allows agencies to learn new strategies.
“Respect both ways, both with the public and police are paramount for us to really have positive outcomes with our contacts out there in the field,” said Evangelous.
Tomorrow, Capt. Ron Johnson of the Missouri Highway Patrol will be the keynote speaker for the conference. Johnson has been nicknamed the “Peacemaker of Ferguson” for his efforts to defuse violence following the killing of unarmed black teen Michael Brown.
The event is free and open to the public, however, seating is limited for the keynote speech. If you would like to attend the event, stop by the Wilmington Police Department to pick up a free ticket, which is required to attend.
