Wilmington Police: Teen shot himself, then called 911


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Wilmington police have charged a 15-year-old validated gang member in connecting with a shooting in Wilmington this afternoon.

It happened at 15th and Castle Streets.

Police say the call came in just before 1:30 p.m. When officers and EMS arrives, they found a 15-year-old shot in the upper thigh area.  EMS took him to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

After an investigation, police determined the juvenile shot himself while in a vehicle. He then called 911, reporting he had be struck by a stray bullet.

The juvenile has been charged with discharging a firearm within city limits, possession of a handgun by a minor and filing a false police report.
