Wilmington Police offering reward for help in finding stolen equipment
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Officials are offering a reward after a weekend car break-in that ended with stolen police equipment.
According to a release from the Wilmington Police Department, a Crimestoppers reward of up to $5,000 is being offered to anyone with information. The stolen equipment includes a gun, a bulletproof vest and ammunition.
The items were taken from a car at the home of an officer in Leland.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Agency is leading the investigation. Officials say this car break-in was one of several to happen over the weekend in Leland.
“Our investigators are working closely with ATF and the Leland Police Department to find the individuals responsible for this theft and to recover the weapon and equipment that were stolen,” says Chief Ralph Evangelous. “If anyone has any information about this crime we encourage you to use Text-a-Tip or Crimestoppers.”

WPD is also conducting an internal investigation to determine if the officer secured the weapon and equipment properly. No other weapons were stolen from the department’s inventory.
No personnel action has been taken since the theft happened.
