Wilmington police prepare for large crowds during Independence Day celebrations

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– As thousands of people head to downtown Wilmington to celebrate Independence Day, the Wilmington Police Department is increasing its presence to help keep residents and visitors safe.

The city is expected to welcome about 10,000 visitors throughout the holiday weekend as people gather for festivities, explore downtown shops and restaurants, enjoy carriage rides, and watch the fireworks along the Cape Fear River.

To manage the large crowds, the Wilmington Police Department will have additional officers on patrol throughout downtown and other high-traffic areas.

“We are going to have more officers in the downtown area covering the events to ensure everyone is safe,” said Sgt. Ron Evans. “Citizens will see an influx of officers on patrol, including foot patrols in the downtown area and throughout the city as a whole.”

Officials are also encouraging anyone attending the July 4 celebration to plan ahead.

Police recommend arriving early and thinking about your departure before choosing where to park. Those leaving immediately after the fireworks should expect traffic delays of one to two hours.

Downtown on-street parking will be free during the celebration. However, parking at city, convention center, and county parking decks will cost $10 after 4 p.m.

Drivers are also reminded that standing, stopping, or parking will not be allowed on bridges, roadways, or medians along U.S. Highways 17, 74/76, 133, or 421.

Police encourage everyone attending the festivities to be patient, follow traffic directions, and allow extra travel time to help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday celebration.
