Wilmington police standoff ends peacefully

 

 

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) –  Wilmington police say a man has surrendered after an 11-hour standoff.

Police say the man repeatedly threatened to harm himself.

It began around 1:00 a.m. in the 300 block of Davie Drive.  Police responded to a dispute between two men.

When they arrived, police say they found 48-year-old Robert Slade Russell inside the duplex with a knife threatening to harm himself.

Police sent in negotiators.

Around 12:00 p.m., the man came out of his home and surrendered.

Police say Russell is being taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for a psychiatric examination.
