Wilmington Pride celebrates Supreme Court decisions

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Pride held a rally tonight to celebrate the Supreme Court decisions on gay marriage.

“This wonderful day not only for Wilmington Pride, but for the LGBT community and the nation as a whole,” Ryan Burris of Wilmington Pride said. “This a gigantic step forward.”

Clarice Rodriquez and Sharon Cleary were married one year ago in Holland. They are celebrating their anniversary and this decision.

“We were just excited and shouting and dancing in the living room. We just feel free again, it feels like a bureaucratic obstacle has been removed. It feels normal again,” the couple said.

While many countries in the world accept same sex marriage, this does not apply across the US. This is one battle for benefits. The Defense of Marriage Act still stands.

“This has been in the works for a while now with the Supreme Court, but I believe we will continue to go further along this path and continue with equality for all,” Burris said.

While supporters at the vigil were certainly happy with Wednesday’s Supreme Court decisions, they vow to continue until same sex marriage is enforced equally across the country.
