Wilmington property owners could see larger tax increase

WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — City residents could see a property tax rate increase three times larger than expected as part of the 2018-19 fiscal year budget.

At Monday’s agenda review meeting, council members were presented two scenarios that would raise the property tax rate 1-cent or 1 1/2-cent, rather than the previously discussed half-cent hike.

City budget director Laura Mortell presented the scenarios Monday at the request of council, which specifically identified several funding deficiencies it would like to see included in the budget.

Following a discussion of the scenarios, the majority of the council agreed the larger increase should be pursued as city budget staff continue to hammer out the details of the budget.
