Wilmington Summer Swim League championships to bring more than 1,700 swimmers together

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More than 1,700 young swimmers are expected to compete this weekend as the Wilmington Summer Swim League hosts its annual championship meets.
The league, which has been part of the Wilmington community since the early 1970s, provides summer competitive swimming opportunities for children of varying skill levels. Organizers say many volunteer coaches have dedicated decades to the program, with some serving for more than 45 years.
Championship competition begins Sunday, July 19, at the UNCW Natatorium. Swimmers ages 6 and under will compete beginning at 9 a.m., followed by the 7-8 age group at noon and the 9-10 age group at 3 p.m.
The championships continue Monday, July 20, at Cape Fear Country Club. The 11-12 age group is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m., followed by swimmers ages 13-18 at 5:30 p.m.
Before the older swimmers begin competition Monday evening, league officials will present the annual Marcia Pollard Award. The scholarship recognizes two graduating senior swimmers each year and helps support their college education.
League organizers say the championships are one of the largest youth sporting events of the summer in the Cape Fear region, bringing together swimmers, families and volunteers from across the community.
