Wilmington teen Graysen Pinder wins Kids Baking Championship

WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — Wilmington’s Graysen Pinder is Food Network’s newest Kids Baking Champion after winning in the season finale episode Monday.

The 13-year-old beat out 12 other bakers from across the country this season, which premiered in January. Pinder, a Wilmington Christian Academy student, took home $25,000 and will get her own feature in Food Network Magazine as the grand prize.

In back-to-back episodes Monday night, Pinder showed off her technical skills first in the semi-final, creating 3D dinosaur cookies and then in the finale — a chocolate cake decorated as a pineapple.

In the “Dinomighty” challenge, Pinder used her grandmother’s cookie recipe, which uses heavy whipping cream, to bake stegosaurus cookies with a hint of orange. While other bakers struggled to get their cookies upright and hold a 3D shape, Pinder easily executed the challenge. Judges only found fault with the twist they gave bakers — creating a dino “egg.” Pinder made a cake egg judges Valerie Bertinelli and Duff Goldman deemed as “too gooey” and “too sweet.”
