Wilmington tracks ahead with possible rail-realignment project
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A rail realignment is in the works for Wilmington and it could have drastic effects for the city and beyond.
The projected outcomes of the realignment include further economic development, help with congestion, affordable housing opportunities and eventually a bigger public transportation system.
Rail Realignment Project Coordinator Laura Padgett explains the step-by-step process of making these outcomes possible.
“The project is to basically remove the freight rail from the heart of the City of Wilmington and take that freight rail directly from the port across the river and up the west side of the river into Brunswick/Columbus County,” Padgett said.
Padgett says the public transportation system would eventually become part of Wave Transit.
