Wilmington walking tour teaches kids about city’s history
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Dozens of third graders hit the streets of Wilmington Tuesday morning to learn about the city’s history.
The Historic Wilmington Foundation and New Hanover County Schools team up for the program, called the Tar Heels Go Walking Tour.
The tour introduces kids to things like historic preservation, architecture and public art.
The first stop was the Wilmington Fire Station on Market Street, where kids learned about how being a firefighter, and the city itself, evolves and changes over time.
The program also teaches kids the importance of knowing the history behind our community.
“I think Tar Heels helps students get a sense of the community they’re growing up in,” Historic Wilmington Foundation Executive Director George Edwards said. “I think it gives them a sense of the people who came before them who made this community so rich.”
The HWF works with more than 2,400 third graders each year, taking kids to several spots around town to teach them more about what makes our river city so unique.
