Wilmington Celebrates Flag Day

On this June 14th, Americans across the country gather to celebrate Flag Day. Each year, the city of Wilmington holds a Flag Day proclamation ceremony on behalf of the Knights of Columbus and the Veterans Council.

This kicks off a 21-day flag salute. During these three weeks from flag day through july 4th, a different volunteer will raise the flag as a sign of honor and respect to our nation’s symbol. It’s a special way to honor old glory.

“It means an awful lot,” says Dennis Carter of the Knights of Columbus. “Especially to individuals like myself who have an immigrant background. We really treasure and honor what that flag represents in this nation.”

Flag day marks the anniversary of the adoption of the flag on this day in 1777. It wasn’t observed as a national holiday until 1949.
