Wilmington gets new walking trail
WILMINGTON — Folks in Wilmington now have another place to get in shape.
Wednesday morning Mayor Bill Saffo helped open the new Wilmington Walks course at Holly Tree Elementary.
The 1.7-mile loop runs around the school and through the neighborhood. It’ll take you right to the YWCA and Holly Tree Racquet Club.
The mayor said the trail will help residents fight a growing obesity problem. And, he said, it’s something the community wanted.
Saffo said, “The community has said over and over again we need more park space, we need more recreation space, and we need more places where we can walk and run and bike. And this ties into that initiative to provide that for our citizens, so we can keep that quality of life in our community, and get people in the outdoors where they should be.”
The Holly Tree trail is the third in a series of trails that will tie into the City’s 9.5 mile long multi-use trail. It will run from Halyburton Park to Wrightsville Beach.
