Wilmington man claims $100,000 Bankroll Doubler prize
RALEIGH – Instant scratch tickets have been lucky for many players this week, but none as lucky as William “Randy” Smith, an electrical contractor from Wilmington.
William “Randy” Smith was shocked when he realized that he had scratched off the $100,000 top prize on his “Bankroll Doubler” ticket. He purchased two tickets after attending the local Sudan Temple Shrine Club meeting on Monday night, but decided on one more when he was handed his change.
“I started scratching. I saw a ‘1’ and a ‘0’ and said, ‘I got my $10 back anyway,’” Smith said. “Looks like another ‘0.’ $100. That’s pretty good. I saw a little decimal point at the bottom and I thought, ‘This might be something.’ That’s when I saw the other three zeros.” Smith plans to use a portion of his winnings, worth $68,001 after taxes, on purchasing carpet for his home and some new Carhartt work pants. The ticket was purchased at Masonboro Country Store on Masonboro Loop Road in Wilmington.
This isn’t the first time Smith has won playing the North Carolina Education Lottery. In 2007, he won $2,000 playing the King of Cash scratch off game. He also won a Monopoly® Premier Edition board game in a recent Super Monopoly® second-chance drawing. Despite these wins, Smith doesn’t consider himself a lucky person, saying “Every now and then, a little horseshoe appears.”
