Wilmington man given counterfeit money

WILMINGTON — A local man is out $100 today, simply for being nice. This really could happen to anyone trying to be helpful. We were contacted by a local man who was basically robbed, but it didn’t involve a gun and he wasn’t attacked.

He was simply trying to help someone seemingly in need.

Ronald Hopkins was at the Shop-N-Go gas station on Market and 17th Streets when he was approached by a man claiming the cashier wouldn’t take his $100 bill, and that he needed gas.

Without thinking twice Hopkins reached into his own pocket, and traded him change for the bill. He says he thought it was suspicious when the man drove off without even getting the gas.

His suspicions were confirmed when his bank contacted him about the $100 bill being counterfeit.

Hopkins said, “I don’t want this to happen to anyone else and anyone out there do not give anyone any change for anything.”

Hopkins says he plans to file a police report in hopes they’ll be able to work with the gas station to view surveillance video for any leads.
