Wilmington man’s architectural work honored

WILMINGTON — A Wilmington man who made his mark on the architecture world was honored Friday.

A ceremony at the Bellamy Mansion revealed a highway historical marker named for Robert R. Taylor.

Taylor was the first African-American to graduate from MIT’s architecture program.
He designed many buildings, including most of Tuskegee University’s.

The historical marker will be on Market Street, between Eighth and Ninth Streets.

Wilmington historian Janet Seapker said, “Everybody who is marked by one of these markers has got to be discovered to be of statewide historical significance. So Robert R. Taylor has achieved that status.”

There are about 1,500 historical markers throughout the state.
