Wilmington Railroad Museum receives noteworthy donations

The Wilmington Railroad Museum has received several exceptional donations to recognize its role in presenting railroad history and heritage.

• A Norfolk & Western Y6B scale model locomotive and tender from Broadway Limited International. The museum was selected as one of only 50 sites in the country to operationally test and evaluate the locomotive for the manufacturer prior to market. True to its real-life example, the locomotive can pull a string of as many as 55 coal cars around the Museum’s extensive and highly detailed layout.

• A limited-production scale model train from the collection of the Lawrence Scripps Wilkinson Foundation of St. Clair Shores MI. The train faithfully reproduces the “Vacationer” operated by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad from 1938 to 1955 in service between New York and Miami. The train can be shown for static display or operated on a layout.

• A framed oil painting originally given to ACL president Champion McD Davis in 1952. The painting was created by artist Gabriella Capitani from Florence IT and presented by the citizens of Italy in appreciation for the involvement of the ACL in the “Friendship Train” which delivered food and relief supplies to European countries following World War II. Its return to Wilmington helps to illustrate the philanthropic role of railroads in post-war reconstruction.

For over 30 years the Wilmington Railroad Museum has showcased railroad history and heritage with informative exhibits, interactive features, and scale model operational demonstration. Enjoyed by more than 18,000 visitors a year, the Museum emphasizes the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and how it shaped commerce and activity in Wilmington from 1834 to 1960.
