Wilmington welcomes first ever city-owned green building

Wilmington city officials have opened the first ever city-owned green building. The building, on the corner of 17th and Marstellar Streets will house the city street sweeper vehicles.

The project cost the city about a million dollars.

Officials say the building will eventually pay for itself, because it creates it’s own energy through solar panels.

“We tried to design it not only to minimize the use of electricity in the building, but also to produce the electricity that we were using,” said city storm water manager David Mayes.

Other green aspects of the building include motion sensor lighting, and radiant heat flooring.
