Wilmingtonian appointed to NC Commission on Volunteerism & Community Service
Gov. Bev Perdue has appointed Tannis F. Nelson of Wilmington to the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service.
Nelson is a consultant for Nelson Consulting and Marketing and a substitute teacher for New Hanover County Schools. She is a member of the North Carolina Partnership for Children serving as the vice chair of the board, vice chair of the governance committee, and parliamentarian. Also, she is a member of the Education Advisory Committee for the N.C. Seventh Congressional District and president of the N.C. Association of Parliamentarians. In 1992, she was awarded the President’s Annual Volunteer Action Award from President George H.W. Bush and in 2008 the Presidential Call to Service Award from President George W. Bush. She received her bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
The North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service encourages and recognizes community service and volunteer participation as a means of community and state problem solving. The commission promotes and supports voluntary citizen engagement in government and private programs throughout the state to develop a long-term, comprehensive vision and plan of action for community service initiatives in NC. To serve as the state’s liaison to national and state organizations that supports its mission. The commission has 25 members, each serving a three-year term. The Governor appoints all members.
