Wilmington’s Bourbon Street still in legal battle over ‘Hand Grenade’ cocktails
WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — The owner of a Cajun-themed restaurant located on Front Street in downtown Wilmington is denying claims he infringing on a famed New Orleans cocktail.
In June Tropical Isle, a New Orleans-based restaurant in the French Quarter, filed suit against Bourbon Street LLC, saying the Wilmington business was selling its famed Hand Grenades. The alcoholic drinks are sold in neon-green cylindrical cups in the shape of grenades and can be seen being toted around Bourbon Street by tourists.
The suit claims Tropical Isle discovered Bourbon Street Wilmington was selling counterfeit cocktails falsely designated as Hand Grenade cocktails. This claim comes after Bourbon Street was sent a cease and desist letter in August 2013. In response to that letter Bourbon Street signed an agreement with Tropical Isle stating they would honor the request to cease and desist the unauthorized use of the Hand Grenade and additionally all Hand Grenade trademarks at the restaurant.
