Wilmington’s Cotton Exchange to throw 40th anniversary bash
WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — It is doubtful Cotton Exchange founders Scotsman Alexander Sprunt and his son James knew what a Pokemon was back in the 1860s. But the cotton exporting businesses that transformed into a modern day shopping and dining complex in 1976 is celebrating its 40th anniversary next month with events including a Pokemon hunt and live music.
The Cotton Exchange, made up of eight historic buildings a block from Wilmington’s riverfront, houses more than 25 stores and restaurants connected by corridors and courtyards. After opening in 1976 it was one of the first downtown buildings in North Carolina to adapt and utilize existing historic buildings.
A free anniversary celebration Saturday, Sept. 17, will showcase The Cotton Exchange’s history and changes. Photos will be placed around the buildings that show off its deep historic roots in Wilmington, said Angi Israel with Plan A Advertising, the company helping to organize the celebration.
