Wilson County man grows record-setting watermelon
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams weighs 215 pounds — or 17 pounds less than the record setting watermelon at the State Farmers Market.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that the 232-pounder grown by Wilson County’s H.C. Williams broke the record set in 2002 by one pound. H.C. Williams won $1,000 for his whopper of a melon.
Williams says he grows big watermelons as a hobby in his nursery, and he estimated that he spent two hours a day, six days a week on the fruit since the end of April.
Too much water can harm the plants. And this year’s erratic temperatures, rainfall and even a hailstorm were not always ideal.
Williams also said the size means the watermelons probably aren’t very ripe on the inside.
