WILMINGTON (WWAY) — The Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization presented its annual report to Wilmington City Council Tuesday night, with a major focus on the future of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.

The discussion comes as local leaders continue looking for ways to close a significant funding gap for the multi-million-dollar project, as the amount of funding available only sits at $327 million dollars.

During the presentation Executive Director Mike Kozlosky discussed efforts to find funding for a replacement of the bridge, noting how the full project costs over one billion dollars, regardless of which proposed bridge is built.

The WMPO’s alternative funding subcommittee found a local sales tax to be one possible option, which would require voter approval.

The organization also discussed a three-county funding partnership involving New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation will hold public hearings on the bridge replacement project.

The meetings will be held on September 14 at Cape Fear Community College and September 15 at the Leland Cultural Arts Center, both beginning at 4:30 PM.
